How to: Make a Reading Pillow by Annemarie

February 20, 2019 10 Comments

HOW TO MAKE: a Reading Pillow at astitchahalf.net

This Reading Pillow has a Pocket in Front to keep a Book in. Also a Handle to carry it around and we used a soft Fleece Fabric for the back which makes this a comfy and fun Pillow.

We used the "My First Glasses Reading Pillow" as an example.

For this Reading Pillow we used the following:

(Our Finished Pillow Sleeve Size = 17" x 17" or 43cm x 43cm)

* Cut-away Stabilizer to fit the hoop x 1 layer
* Thin batting x 1 (to cover the inner area of the hoop) Placed between the stabilizer and the fabric
* Pre-Quilted Fabric  1 x (11" x 19") - or use the quilted design (included) before you stitch the Design.
* Contrast Fabric 1 x (13" x 13") - we used the yellow "stars" poly cotton

* Contrast Fabric 1 x (for the handle) - we used the yellow "stars" poly cotton 9" long x 4" wide (Fold in half and Iron. Fold both sides toward the center and iron again. Fold in half and your "Handle" is ready to be used)

* Fabric for the back of the pillow - we used a fleece linen 2 x 24" by 24" This will be folded in half and overlapped to form a pocket at the back where you can insert the pillow

* Bias Binding - We made our own from sheet linen fabric 19" long and 4" wide. (Fold in half and Iron. Fold both sides toward the center and iron again. Fold in half and your Bias Binding is ready to be used)
* Thread (see color sheet included)

Once your Embroidery Design is stitched out, place the Bias Binding to cover the top edge of you Design. Secure with a straight stitch on your sewing machine

Place the Embroidery on Top of the Contrast Fabric (lower bottom) pin and secure with a straight stitch

Fold The Pillow Sleeve in half to determine the top center. Pin the "handle" in place and secure with a straight stitch

Place the fabric to the back by folding the 2 x pieces in half. They should overlap in the middle of the pillow. Secure with pins and then with a straight stitch.

Cut the corners as indicated below to create neat corners when the sleeve is turned outside in.

Your pillow sleeve is complete. More specific details on the exact measurements and Bias Binding are included in your Download. Enjoy making this Fun Project!

This is an adorable idea. Cant wait to give it to our grandchildren. We have one Special Book that my husband always reads to them while they are toddlers. The plan is to get more copies of this book and tuck it into the pocket. We will tell them their our GREAT grandchildren should remember us with the sweet presentation. LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing your talent.
