Freestanding Lace Lantern Tutorial
Materials & Stabilizer needed:
Begin by hooping two layers of water-soluble stabilizer. This will provide the support needed for freestanding lace embroidery.
Embroidery
Stitch your selected lantern design and let your creativity shine.
Each lantern requires exactly 10 panels, all stitched in the same size.
You receive designs to complete 3 unique sized Lanterns -
Actual size when completed:
Important: Match your top and bobbin thread colors, as both sides of the lace will be visible in the finished lantern.
After Embroidery
Once stitching is complete, remove the design from the hoop and carefully trim away any excess stabilizer.
You may assemble your lantern using a sewing machine, hand stitching, or a glue gun—choose the method you’re most comfortable with.
Assembly (Sewn Method)
Arrange the panels into 5 pairs, placing two panels side by side.
Use a zigzag stitch to join the long edges of each pair (you will have 5 joined sets).
Fold each pair with right sides facing outward and zigzag stitch along the opposite long edges, stitching close to the edge.
Next we will join the 5 arms of the lantern.
Carefully join the V-shaped edges of each section together. Take your time—accurate alignment is key to a neat final result.
Continue joining until all 5 triangular sections are connected.
View the lantern from above to ensure it is even and symmetrical.
Leave a small opening at the back to insert a fairy light or battery-operated tea light.
Rinse the lantern briefly in tepid water. Leaving a small amount of stabilizer will help maintain a firm, structured shape.
Dry using a hair dryer, shaping the lantern as it dries.
Tip: Lightly stuffing the lantern with batting while drying will help it retain its 3D form.
Finish by adding an embellishment to the centre for a polished look.
Option 2 — Glue Gun Construction
Preparing the panels:
