Project Idea: Quilted Storage Basket Tutorial 

Overview

This is a fabric basket — a structured, free-standing organiser. The project uses block designs like our Carrington or Loxley embroidery designs, which are then assembled into a box shape with a firm inner structure.

Materials You'll Need

Fabric

• Outer fabric: cotton or linen-cotton blend
• Lining fabric: coordinating cotton (can be the same)
• Stabiliser: cut-away stabilizer and batting (this gives the basket structure and firm walls)

Notions

• Cut-away stabiliser for hooping
• Temporary spray adhesive (optional)
• Thread: We used two thread colors
• Sharp scissors or rotary cutter
• Clips or pins
  

How the Design Works

Your basket has 4 side panels + 1 base panel, all featuring the block embroidery designs. At 13" for the largest block, this is a generous tote-sized basket — likely approximately 13" × 13" × 13" when assembled. (see note below for smaller hoop sizes)

Each panel essentially consist of :

Outer fabric → Batting/Wadding → Lining fabric

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Hoop and stitch

1. Hoop a piece of cut-away stabiliser as your base layer.
2. Place the batting on top of the stabilizer. (Use adhesive spray if you prefer)
3. Place fabric on top of the batting. (Use adhesive spray if you prefer)
4.  Stitch the 1st color stop. This will secure the batting and fabric to the stabilizer
5. Continue with the rest of the design.

Step 2 — Trim and Square Up

• Remove the stitched design from hoop.
• Trim each panel to a consistent size, squaring the edges with a ruler and rotary cutter.
• Leave a ½" seam allowance on joining edges.

Step 3 — Assemble the Basket

1. Using your sewing machine, join the 4 side panels the the four sides of the base panel. Stitch with a strong needle (denim or topstitch needle) and a slightly longer stitch length.
2. Close the four side seams by sewing from top inward (toward the base).
   

Step 4 — Lining and Finishing

• Make a replica from plain or contrasting fabric ( four sides and a base panel)
• Turn lining fabric inside out and place inside the embroidered panel. (right sides facing each other).
• With a staright stitch on your sewing machine, sew the lining to the embroidered basket - leave open approx 3-inches.
• Turn basket inside out throigh the hole
• Close the opening with hand stitches or 
• Topstitch around the top opening to close and neaten

Tips for Smaller hoops

Why not stitch 4 quarter designs (included in your download) to create one large block. For example using your 5*7 hoop can result in a 10" x 10" block.
