Make this tote bag with a simple drawstring closure. You would be able to easily adjust the size of your bag by reading through this tutorial. Perfect as a hobby bag or everyday tote. Enjoy creating this beginners tote bag.
Drawstring Tote Bag Tutorial
The finished bag measures: 11" (w) x 12" (h) x 4" (d)
You need the following to make this bag:
Attach the fusible fleece to the 2 x side panels and with a straight stitch on your sewing machine, stitch to the side panels to each of the embroidered blocks.
Add the fusible fleece to the base fabric and stitch to the "embroidered/side panel strip"
Fold, iron and stitch the straps x 2
Stitch the straps 1" from the top corner of each side panel. One to the front panel and one to the back panel.
Stitch the top fabric to the top section of your tote bag.
Stitch the lining fabric to the top section.
Close the side seam, but leave a 1" opening where the lining and top fabric meet for the cord.
Cut 3" squares from each base corner.
Fold each of the 4 corners and secure each one with a straight stitch.
Through the opening in the base lining - turn the bag inside out and close the opening in the base of the lining with a straight stitch.
Secure the top edge with a straight stitch and stitch another straight stitch approx 1" wider.
Locate the opening to insert the cord.
Thread the cord all around and make a knot to join the 2 loose ends of the cord.
Enjoy making your Drawstring Tote Bag! We look forward to seeing photos of your bag.
Happy stitching!
